Early life of John Rodney Mullen
Mullen was born in Gainesville, Florida, United States, and started skateboarding at the age of ten, on the occasion of New Year’s Day of 1977. His neighbor friend took him to a skateboard. He said, My dad would not let me have skateboarding as I got hurt and never became good again. His father was a dentist, but before that, he was in the military. He learned to skateboard in the garage.
He did vert skating, which was done in pools, where you could be weightless. The other style, he did, was called freestyle, which tricks are done on flat ground. Mullen became obsessed with the skateboard and practiced for many hours daily. Mullen slept in boots designed to correct a severe pigeon-toe condition as a child.
Professional skateboarding
In 1978 Mullen got the fifth position in the Boy’s Freestyle category at the US Open Championships at Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida. Mullen’s biggest innovator in skateboarding at the time of Walker’s professional skateboarder, Jim McCall, was coached in his early years by Walker. John Mullen was also guided positively by professional skateboarders from Florida, including Ed Womble, George McClellan, and Clyde Rodgers.
Later, Barry Zaritsky coached Mullen, the owner of SiO Safety Shorts. He began perfecting his flat-ground techniques in the family garage. He said that the isolation and lack of terrain naturally guided him towards freestyle skateboarding. From July 1979–August 1980, he is the most creative.

Most time, Mullen skated a mix of styles, including some vert, as skaters who were more freestyle-oriented moved toward the street and those who had skated more transition, bowls, and pools went into vert.
